It gives your business a professional snapshot directly in Google Search and it’s often the first impression someone will get before they even click through to your website.
It links everything together and lets people take action: call you, visit your website, read reviews, and get directions, all without ever leaving Google.
Verifying your profile
When you first set up your profile, you’ll likely need to verify your business. This usually involves receiving a postcard with a code from Google to confirm your address. Sounds easy, but depending on what’s happening in the world, it can take a while (and yes, I’ve had one turn up after the code expired).
When choosing your service area during setup, try starting with just the local area near your business, this is much easier to verify and doesn’t usually require a postcard. Once you’ve verified, you can go back and expand the area you serve.
Once you're set up: optimise it for SEO
Setting it up is one thing but making it work hard for your business means spending a little time optimising your profile.
Here’s how:
- Ask for reviews, give them the link to make it super easy for them
- Load some photos of your brand, team and office to show where customers/clients can go to see you.
- Fill out all fields, Google likes it when you complete your profile including your business categories and you’ll be more likely to show up in searches because you are an A+ student doing all the tasks.
- Use keywords (that people would use to search for you or your services) in the copy but don’t be too spammy.
- Set a reminder for every few months to update things, respond to reviews and upload fresh images. Google will like this!
- Check your insights to understand how visible you are.
